Here is my standard disclaimer. I received this title as an eBook when the Author ran an Amazon free day promotion. I saw it offered and downloaded it on my own accord. The Author did not send me a copy to review, and did not request me to review this book. A rating will follow this review on Goodreads and Amazon.
I review books based on the story itself. I’m not an editor and I’m not reading these books to proof them for Authors. I’ve read classics or best sellers with mistakes in them. The only time I will let mistakes effect my review is if the mistakes made reading the book cumbersome. At that point, I will just give it a lower number rating while reviewing the actual story itself.
I don’t like reading a review that is basically the back cover blurb, or something that gives away too much of the story. Personally, I like suspense. I like to discover the details of the story as I read them. So, please enjoy this spoiler free book review!
I’m happy to announce that the second book I’m reviewing on my blog is a book called DAVENPORT HOUSE by Marie Silk. It is the first book in a series.
First of all, is this a genre that someone like me is a fan of? Surprisingly, yes. I am a fan of period pieces. Last of the Mohicans, Atonement, Braveheart, Belle, Ever After, Gangs of New York, A Royal Night Out, etc. So it was a pleasure to read this book.
DAVENPORT HOUSE is a mystery & historical fiction, and it does the genre right! I was afraid that it was going to be a dull read or that it would be slow going. Not every period piece is a great read, but this one was. You were drawn in at the beginning by an upcoming, ominous event. Then it was a mysterious twist after twist. This isn’t just a “who done it,” but also a “why did they do it?” That, and a “how will things work out!” I was scared that things would end poorly but was relieved when I got to the resolution. The story never slowed down, it was captivating from beginning to end.
Mary Davenport; the protagonist, is the type of character that you root for. She’s not one dimensional, and is very kind. She is up against some pretty great odds. You will want to read every single sentence to see what happens to her, her family, her staff, and her estate.
I enjoyed reading this book. The story was exceptional and it was exciting to see how Mary Davenport ended up in the end. The cover looked professionally done. I recommend this book to others. I rate this book 5 out of 5!
